What are the best low maintenance houseplants? Los Angeles Times

house plants

You have a wealth of varieties of these common house plants to choose from, in many colors and patterns. Although they'll live in low light, give them bright, indirect light to maintain their color. If you want to keep Venus fly traps at home, be sure to provide them with bright, indirect light and relatively high humidity levels of above 50%.

Spider plants

As desert plants, ponytail palms don’t require much water and prefer bright light throughout the day. Anthurium prefers regular (but not daily) watering and bright, indirect light. They also prefer high humidity and, if raised well, can bloom through much of the year. Proper care of this plant requires more effort than other common houseplants, however, so it’s not an excellent choice for beginners. Aloe vera is one of the most well-known houseplants in the world. As a desert-type succulent, it enjoys bright light but only requires minimal watering to stay healthy.

BEST INDOOR PLANTS FOR BRIGHT LIGHT

Growing from tubers, cyclamen will at times go dormant, which many houseplant novices may mistake for plant death. If your cyclamen appears to be dying back, but its tubers are still firm, there’s still hope. Simply stop watering your plant, place it in a cool, dry place for eight to ten weeks and your cyclamen should begin to regrow. While bird’s nest ferns love moisture and humidity like all ferns do, avoid watering the center of this species as it can cause rot. Requiring only minimal fertilizer, feed your anthurium every three to four months with a quarter-strength liquid fertilizer and avoid overwatering your plants to prevent root rot. This coveted houseplant is harder to come by compared to others on this list, but that only makes the hunt more exciting.

Best Indoor Plants for Any Room

house plants

A living stones plant that blooms a beautiful daisy-like flower at the end of fall – the beginning of winter. This Calathea has a clump forming habit and displays the most striking leaves with purplish colored backs. This amazing bulb-based plant “beach spider lily” enjoys environments that are downright aquatic and easy to maintain.

It has fleshy leaves and stems, so doesn’t need too much watering. Wear gloves when handling – the plant has sharp thorns and also an irritant sap. It's tall, sword-shaped leaves make stunning vertical accents among a group of leafy, bushy plants. And because of its ability to tolerate low light levels and low humidity, Sansevieria is an extremely adaptable houseplant. Coming in solid green and variegated varieties, spider plants do best with a regular watering schedule, which for most areas amounts to a weekly watering.

Named for its fan-shaped leaves that resemble fishtails or gingko leaves, fishtail palms are an interesting species that comes from the tropical regions of southeast Asia. With simple needs, try to ensure your emerald ripple is watered regularly, approximately once a week, and reduce waterings a bit during winter. Simple to propagate, new plant starts can be grown from both stem and leaf cuttings. A relative of philodendrons, emerald gems need a little more care, as watering issues are the major reason why houseplant enthusiasts may struggle with this plant.

There are house plants for sun and shade, dry conditions and humid bathrooms – almost a house plant for every situation and every home gardener. Its easy-care and lush leaves make Schefflera a stand-out for indoor gardens. It's more tolerant of low humidity than most tropical houseplants. Give your plant a quarter-turn in front of the window every week to expose all sides to indirect sunlight. Like other members of the ficus family, this big-leafed tree wants bright, indirect light.

The kentia palm plant has the scientific name of Howea Forsteriana. Green Velvet Alocasia – Alocasia MicholitzianaStriking arrow-shaped leaves displaying thick white veins and a green velvety surface. Golden Pothos – Epipremnum AureumA climbing species that grows well indoors with the correct care given.

Houseplants That Will Brighten Your Home With Color

Anthurium, like peace lilies, are flowering plants with a distinctively colorful spathe surrounding their flowers. Anthurium has a particularly glossy, almost plastic-like appearance that makes it look nearly artificial at first glance. The cut flowers do well in bouquets, so it’s especially popular among florists. What makes aloe stand out from other plants is the thick gel inside its leaves. The gel has numerous benefits for the skin, ranging from killing bacteria to moisturizing. There’s a reason countless healthcare products include aloe vera gel as a major ingredient.

Bromeliads come in over three thousand species, so talk to your local gardening store about which varieties are best for your area.

Despite their delicate nature, fiddle leaf figs are very lovely plants with large, glossy leaves that are sure to add color and interest to your home. Closely related to the weeping fig, fiddle leaf figs are wildly popular houseplants that, when grown as dwarf trees, generally reach around 9’ tall. With basic care requirements, crotons prefer regular watering so that soil remains consistently moist, but not soggy. When well-maintained, certain varieties can grow up to 6’ tall, but be mindful of their sap, which can cause slight skin irritation. An easy-care plant, Chinese croton prefers moderate, regular waterings and higher than normal humidity. While suitable for medium light rooms, if your Chinese croton leaves begin to turn green, it’s a clear indication that your plant could use a bit more light.

Known botanically as Spathiphyllum, this tropical beauty tolerates low light levels. But give it bright light, and it will dependably produce long-lasting white spathes, each surrounding a spadix covered densely with its tiny, true flowers. A native of Brazil, urn plants are a type of bromeliad known for their patterned, variegated leaves and big, bold and beautiful pink blooms. Like other bromeliads, urn plants only bloom once in their lifetime and die back afterwards; however, they will often produce “pups” for the next generation. A native of the warm, humid rainforests of Queensland and New Guinea, shingle plants should be kept away from cold drafts and provided with at least 70% humidity levels.

Highly adaptable as houseplants, ponytail palms are actually succulents related to agaves and so prefer dry soil. Allow the top 2 to 3” of soil to dry out between waterings and fertilize once a month during the growing season with a balanced organic liquid fertilizer. If you love a morning cup of Joe, why not try growing your own coffee plant? Native to Ethiopia, this plant blooms tiny white flowers in spring that eventually ripen into black pods with two coffee beans per pod.

Whether you display your ivy on a pedestal by itself, surround it with other plants, or add it to a dish garden, its beautiful foliage is a stand-out. With attractive, highly-patterned leaves in shades of green with purplish undersides, this showy foliage plant is closely related to the prayer plant. A tropical tree from the wetlands of Central and South America, money trees are believed to be lucky and are often given as housewarming gifts. For a more impressive arrangement, try potting up several lucky bamboo plants together and place them in a tall planter for added appeal. Also known as the golden shrimp plant, cheery lollipop plants boast bright, golden-orange upright flowers that are hard to miss.

During the day, their brightly colored, pink and green leaves lay flat; however, as light fades, their leaves move upwards as if in prayer. When kept as houseplants, pitcher plants can naturally help combat annoying pests like fruit flies and houseflies. While frequently sold as tabletop plants, older specimens can get quite large and begin to develop woody stems and treelike forms.

Featuring fleshy, globular leaves, string-of-pearls stores water quite well and does best with a thorough watering once every two weeks. Able to be easily propagated in water, pothos come in a wide range of colors and variegation patterns which can add interest to your collection. If you’re looking to add a pothos to your home, try popular varieties like ‘Marble Queen,’ ‘Jade,’ or ‘Neon’ pothos.

17 Most Popular Houseplants

Regular pruning will help it stay at a manageable size, but since it’s easy to care for, it’s another great option for beginners. These orchids typically have light green leaves in ideal conditions and darker leaves if they’re not getting enough light. Under ideal conditions, however, phalaenopsis orchids will bloom with several brightly-colored flowers together and without taking up too much space. Peperomia is ideal for small spaces because they almost never grow more than a foot and a half tall. They enjoy higher humidity and occasional bits of fertilizer but otherwise thrive in most areas.

Maidenhair Fern

It’s one of the most powerfully fragrant indoor blooming plants you can grow, plus it needs very little water. This eye-catching tree, boasting a braided trunk, can grow up to eight feet indoors. It's a popular office gift idea, since it's believed to be a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Aim to expose your money tree to bright, indirect sunlight six hours a day, and only water it when the soil is dry.

Foliage Type Plants

They're also fantastic hanging plants, thanks to their trailing appearance. "The Sansevieria is a great plant choice for first-time plant parents," says Lindsay Pangborn, Bloomscape's plant expert. "With a low-maintenance, adaptable nature, this plant is perfect for all sorts of settings, from low light to direct sun." This spiky, low-maintenance houseplant was the top-searched plant in nearly a dozen states, according to a recent survey by home furnishings site Joybird. It's no surprise, given its set-it-and-forget-it vibe (sunny window and minimal watering) and the beauty and health benefits you can reap from the gel inside the leaves.

Low-maintenance houseplants that thrive on neglect

Peace lilies are easy care plants featuring lance-shaped, glossy leaves and elegant white flowers. As lilies, however, these plants should be avoided in any homes with cats as these plants are known to be very toxic to felines. Aim to create a consistent watering schedule, watering your aralia when the top 1 to 2” of soil is dry to the touch, or approximately once a week during the growing season. Coming in solid and variegated varieties, as a houseplant, English ivy looks thrilling in a hanging basket or when displayed on a high shelf. Just be sure to provide your plant with a little bit extra humidity to prevent leaf drying. Growing up to 6’ tall as a houseplant, crown-of-thorns prefers more water than most succulents, so try to water you plant when the top 1 to 2” of soil feels dry to the touch.

house plants

Rubber plants come in both solid green and variegated varieties and their glossy, fleshy leaves benefit from the occasional dusting to maintain their characteristic sheen. Elegant parlor palms first gained popularity in the Victorian era when they were used to bring a bit of color and a tropical feel to sitting rooms. Today, parlor palms are known to be low maintenance plants that are great for indoor air purification. Goldfish plants can be a bit tricky to care for, but it helps to know that they are epiphytes, like orchids, and should be treated as such. To that end, pot your goldfish plant in a well-draining potting mix suitable for orchids and mist your plant frequently to maintain humidity levels of 50% or above. A native of Australia, there are over 700 different species of eucalyptus, some of which can grow over 150’ tall.

Houseplants That Thrive in Direct Sun

It may be a little challenging to keep rosemary thriving during the winter months, as the plant needs lots of bright sunlight to do well. But it's a plant that tolerates drought, so err on the side of underwatering your rosemary. If you're growing herbs indoors, basil is likely at the top of your list.

A close relative called dwarf schefflera (Schefflera arboricola) has smaller, thicker leaflets and shorter stems. Sometimes called eternity plant because it lasts so long, ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) will even grow in low light and can go weeks without water. The fun nickname aside, you’ll love this plant for its gently arching stems lined on either side with deep green, smooth leaves. Choose a deep green variety or change it up with a variety called 'Raven’ that has almost black leaves. Aloe vera thrives on neglect—in fact, the biggest mistake you can make with this succulent is overwatering, which will cause its leaves to droop. Its leaves come in various sizes and shapes, and are decorated with white spots and edged with small whitish teeth.

You may have encountered it before in grocery stores, laden with bright red, pink, yellow, or orange flowers. Kalanchoe usually blooms in winter and early spring for several weeks. Other than an occasional soaking with water, you won’t have to do much else for this succulent to enjoy its colorful show. Outdoors, a new tree can be a big investment, but easy indoor trees can make affordable yet eye-catching houseplants for beginners.

Highly structural in shape, zebra plants will reach 5 to 8” in height when fully mature. With thick, waxy leaves that are useful for moisture retention, hoyas can withstand some periods of drought; however, they prefer regular watering schedules. When properly maintained, hoyas will produce large, fragrant blooms. While there are over 1000 species of begonia, one of the most popular types to keep is the rex begonia. Smaller than many begonia types, rex begonia maxes out at 18” tall and maintains a tidy, mounding growth habit. Prized for their patterned foliage, rex begonias come in a range of colors, including silver, purple and red.

Try misting your maidenhair fern regularly or, for a lower maintenance option, pot it up and place it on a pebble tray for that extra boost of humidity. Requiring regular feeding, only fertilize your fern with diluted, liquid fertilizer to avoid overwhelming your plant. A native of central and South America, friendship plants have a trailing growth habit, so consider placing yours in a hanging planter and provide it with a little extra humidity. Because they do best with higher than normal household humidity levels and remain quite small (under 12” when mature), friendship plants work well in terrariums too. Begonias are attractive houseplants capable of developing rich, complex-colored leaves and large numbers of bright flowers. They enjoy regular watering and high humidity, with decent light to ensure they can photosynthesize well enough.

Jade plants are common gifts to businesses in some areas are they’re both easy to raise and tend to live for a very long time. Fiddle leaf figs are relatively thin and narrow trees, growing with a single main trunk. The leaves are rather large and bushier but don’t extend too far from the central trunk. Fiddle Leaf Figs enjoy alternating between dry and wet spells, so occasional deep watering works best. Try to give it room-temperature water, as it won’t enjoy colder tap water. As long as you can tame it, English ivy is sturdy and relatively easy to care for.

What's it like On Board Ritz-Carlton's Evrima?

ritz carlton cruise reviews

I loved everything about it and would choose the exact same room again. Now that we’ve got that straight, let’s talk more about the Evrima yachting experience. Evrima, the first yacht of the collection launched in 2022, is a 149 cabin, 298 passenger ship.

Review: Ritz-Carlton Evrima

The pool was well-staffed, and servers came around several times to ask if I needed anything. The Ritz-Carlton sat right next to a village of shops and restaurants in Kapalua, and on our second night we walked to the Pour House restaurant, which served Italian fare and had an extensive wine list. I'd definitely recommend it — our server was lovely, the owner was super friendly, and the food was very good. Breakfast, which was included for two with my booking, was a beautiful buffet spread, served in a restaurant overlooking the pools and the water beyond them. My mom joined me later that day, and we headed to the Alaloa Lounge, overlooking the beautiful pools below, for a celebration drink. Both drinks were steep — my mai tai was $18 and not even that strong, and my mom's vodka martini was $17.

What’s The Price Of A Four Seasons Yacht Cruise?

Both  are surrounded by comfortable loungers for soaking up the sun. The Spa Terrace on deck 9 also features a small whirlpool. Evrima is not particularly aimed at those who would normally choose a cruise, but affluent guests used to staying in Ritz-Carlton properties or equivalent and looking for a similar experience at sea. However, the second-largest number of suites are Signature Suites, which also have their own living and dining area. "They for sure need to work out the kinks," said Southard, who is an avid cruiser.

A service charge — except for spa treatments and salon appointments — is included in the cruise fare. Of course, feel free to tip any crew member that goes above and beyond during your voyage. Where other cruise lines such as Viking and Virgin Voyages have barred children from their ships, Ritz-Carlton has no such limitations on its yachts.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Cruise Reviews

The Bonvoy link also makes Evrima a more fertile ground for multigenerational travelers. Notably, the ship is equipped with a children's playroom -- called Ritz's Kids -- on Deck 8 that's open for children 4 to 12 years of age (for a fee; $45 per child for three hours). Yet according to Prothero, most sailings have only had a handful of children on board, with holiday sailings having a few more than the norm. The executive explained that the kid's club is a standard feature on Ritz-Carlton hotels, so it's also standard on Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. Ritz-Carlton certainly wants you to think of Evrima as a yacht (after all, it's in the brand name).

Additionally, the ship offers rentable custom-crafted “sea limousines” for transfers, coastal tours, and a pair of beach landers, enhancing the signature marina experience, accessible at most anchor ports. The inaugural Four Seasons Yacht will feature 95 suites with terrace decks, ranging from 100 square feet for the deluxe suite to nearly 5,000 square feet for the expansive Funnel Suite, which is the Yacht’s most spacious accommodation. The mega-yacht has an aft marina platform for watersports, providing direct access to the sea. The marina is also used for open-air parties and other events. A selection of water toys (sea kayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling equipment) is provided complimentary to all passengers.

ritz carlton cruise reviews

This cruise costs $29,900 USD per suite per voyage and starts in Barbados, routing via — Marina Day Mayreau — St Lucia – Martinique – Antigua and ending up in Aruba. You'll get all your usual loyalty points and status benefits when booking a hotel with us. In Europe, Ritz-Carlton's first Mediterranean voyage was planned as 8-day roundtrip from Lisbon to Gibraltar, Valencia, Malaga, Ibiza, Palma de Mallorca. With it, the yacht had to start an inaugural Mediterranean season extending through July (2020). For July 5th was scheduled a 9-day itinerary (Bordeaux to London UK) visiting the French ports Belle-Ile, St Malo, Honfleur and also St Peter Port (Guernsey, Channel Islands). From London followed the repositioning to Northern Europe prior to the North Atlantic crossing (via Iceland) to Halifax (departure Sept 12, 2020).

Anyway we arrived at the Le Barthelemy Hotel & Spa and were ushered through the open air lobby to the infinity pool where we chose between umbrella covered chaises around the pool or on the Grand Cul de Sac beach. The Evrima Room – the largest restaurant on the ship and has the feel of a main dining room. We had dinner here the first night, and it was very good, but it’s all indoor seating and we didn’t return. Had we been on a longer cruise we definitely would have gone back. Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking. There's no denying the 623-foot, 300-guest ship is still something of a playground—you could fit three mega yachts (which start at about 60 meters) on the length of Evrima.

This outdoor area is covered by a retractable glass roof and can be operated as al fresco dining lounge by day and as a disco nightclub in the evenings. As a dining venue, Marina Terrace serves a variety of dishes prepared a la minute, as well as handcrafted cocktails. The Marina is an aft-located/stern watersports platform providing direct access to the sea and the ship's watersport equipment. A selection of water toys (sea kayaks, paddleboards) are launched from here and provided complimentary to all passengers.

My review of the Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection’s new luxury yacht, Evrima, and what you can expect. As the most discerning, up-to-the-minute voice in all things travel, Condé Nast Traveler is the global citizen’s bible and muse, offering both inspiration and vital intel. We understand that time is the greatest luxury, which is why Condé Nast Traveler mines its network of experts and influencers so that you never waste a meal, a drink, or a hotel stay wherever you are in the world. There are 149 suites accommodating up to 298 guests on Evrima, the first yacht from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. If you’re planning a trip with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection but don’t have Marriott Bonvoy elite status, consider applying for a credit card that comes with automatic status. This can be an easy way to earn Marriott Bonvoy Silver, Gold, or Platinum status so you can take advantage of the onboard benefits.

Glass doors open to the sweeping staircase leading to Lido / Pool Deck above (aft / on the ship's stern). The Marina is adjacent to an indoor/outdoor solarium (Marina Terrace) which is more a cozy lounge than a conventional sundeck. Due to fire and safety regulations, most of the ship's spaces are sectioned off and subdivided, with metal walls dividing restaurants from lounges and bars. Ritz-Carlton ships pioneered an open floorplan concept ("fluid and transparent") designed to "break down the traditional boundaries between dining and drinking areas".

After a day in port, you might want the hour-long black masque Leg Renewal Treatment ($130) that alleviates tired legs by reducing inflammation and encouraging enhanced circulation. The complete spa oasis includes a Relaxation Lounge and outdoor relaxation areas, including a hot tub all the way forward on that deck. There also are separate "Heat Experience" facilities — aroma steam rooms and dry saunas — for male and female passengers. The spa provides lockers, robes, slippers, shower caps, towels and all the other accouterments you'd expect. As twilight descends, passengers seek out The Observation Lounge on Deck 10.

Travel agents also often get access to special reduced cruise fares or perks that can add a lot of value to your sailing. If something goes wrong, you've got an ally that can work directly with the cruise line on your behalf for a resolution. Maybe this will change in the future, but the line's cruise fares aren't solo traveler-friendly. All suites carry a 200% single supplement (i.e., you will pay double the per-person rate based on double occupancy when you travel in a cabin alone). There is no need to tip the staff on The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection vessels.

It will be interesting to see if the line sticks to its three initial ships or expands to a five-ship fleet. Here are our thoughts -- and those of our members who have been sailing. Each itinerary, too, is designed to spend around two days at anchor, so the marina platform can be used to the full. Spa treatments are on the costly side, with a 60-minute massage costing $225. What’s nice about the spa, though, is that it’s run by Ritz-Carlton, using British ESPA and 111 SKIN products, so there shouldn’t be any of the dreadful pushy sales pitches that you’d get in a OneSpaWorld facility. Then there’s the price for the kids’ club, which is unlikely to bother the kind of customer that sails on Evrima.

Our breakfast always arrived right on time and we ate on our terrace. Servers and deck crew are cordially chatty, full of recommendations, and can be one in the same at times—you may notice some swapping their daytime deck uniform for server’s clothes to pour your wine or bartend in the evenings. Impressively, there’s also an art curator onboard offering up tours of the ship’s sprawling collection. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is a new small-ship luxury cruise line.

I like you two have fun together be it dive bar w cold beer and tequila shots or classy dinner. We’re more beach resorts vs cruising but the diversity of adventures is tempting. After touring the church and grounds we found a taxi to Casa Roots a beach bar and restaurant on Runaway Beach. We didn’t have a reservation which caused a moment of anxiety, but we were early and managed to snag one of the best tables in this totally enchanting location.

North Korea Launches Strategic Cruise Missiles from Submarine

submarine launched cruise missile

KCNA said Kim was also briefed on efforts to develop a nuclear-propelled submarine and other advanced naval vessels. State media said the missiles were Pulhwasal-3-31, a new type of weapon first tested last week in land-based launches from North Korea’s western coast. The upgraded Tomahawk includes extended range, enhanced navigation and communication systems and modernised data-link radio. RGM / UGM-109E Tomahawk (Block IV TLAM-E) is the latest member in the Tomahawk missile family. Kim called the test a success, KCNA said, "which is of strategic significance in carrying out the plan...for modernizing the army which aims at building a powerful naval force." A submarine fired a Pulhwasal-3-31, the same type of strategic missile the country said it test-fired from land last week, KCNA reported.

Soviet Navy/Russian Navy

Its modular design enables the integration of numerous types of warheads, guidance and control systems. The Block Va variants will be named Maritime Strike and have the capability of hitting a moving target. State media photographs published on Monday showed a missile launching into a cloudy sky from the water trailed by a plume of smoke which obscures the type of platform it was being fired from. The secretive country's leader, Kim Jong Un, supervised the test along with other military officials, the official Korean Central News Agency said on Monday. The test was part of his plan to continue "accelerating the nuclear weaponization of our navy," KCNA reported.

North Korea Launches Cruise Missiles From Submarine

“Arming such vessels with nuclear cruise missiles would also reduce the number of conventional missiles each boat could carry, at a time when Pentagon leaders argue that strengthening conventional deterrence is their top priority in the Asia-Pacific,” says Reif. Putting nuclear cruise missile on Virginia-class would be a quick and easy way of ramping up strategic capability. Currently, the only nuclear-armed subs are the fourteen Ohio-class ballistic missile subs, so SLCM-N on Virginia-class would more than double that at a stroke. “They will focus on improving naval power in the East Sea and test weapons systems that can be mounted on submarines, with the first attempt being this strategic cruise missile,” said Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies. The Pulhwasal-3-31 is a new generation of strategic cruise missiles that Pyongyang said it had only tested for the first time on Wednesday, firing multiple missiles toward the Yellow Sea.

Is North Korea’s Kim Jong Un planning war? Experts have conflicting views

RGM / UGM-109C (Block III TLAM-C) is a conventional unitary variant, carrying a 1,000lb-class warhead. RGM / UGM-109D (Block III TLAM-D) is a submunitions dispenser variant armed with 166 combined-effects bomblets. Kim said at the time the country would accelerate the programme to build nuclear-powered submarines. There was scepticism over the real-world utility of such a vessel, especially compared to the more advanced land-based missile systems, because its diesel propulsion generates noise and is limited in range, according to weapons experts. North Korea’s exact sea-based launch capabilities remain unclear, and previous tests have been carried out from older vessels, including from a submerged platform, rather than an actual submarine.

The US signed a foreign military sales (FMS) agreement with the UK in 1995 to supply 65 Tomahawks for use with the Royal Navy nuclear submarines. The Tactical Tomahawk Weapons Control System (TTWCS) integrated within the ship’s systems computes the path to engage targets. TTWCS is also used to communicate with multiple missiles for reassigning the targets and redirecting the missiles in flight. The Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) can strike high-value or heavily defended land targets. The newly-developed Pulhwasal-3-31 missiles “flew in the sky above the East Sea … to hit the island target”, the KCNA news agency reported on Monday, adding that Kim “guided” the launch. The missile test, the first of its kind carried out by the North, took place as South Korea and the United States were about to begin joint military exercises.

Unlike their ballistic counterparts, the testing of cruise missiles is not banned under current UN sanctions against Pyongyang. Pyongyang has accelerated weapons testing in the new year, including tests of what it called an “underwater nuclear weapon system” and a solid-fuelled hypersonic ballistic missile. The 4,000th Tomahawk Block IV missile was delivered to the US Navy in August 2017. The US Navy warships and submarines launched 66 GPS-enabled Tomahawk missiles at Syrian chemical weapon facilities in 2018.

North Korea fires multiple cruise missiles off east coast

On Sunday, North Korea launched two cruise missiles from a submarine in the waters near the country’s eastern port city of Sinpo. The submarine missile launches came right before the United States and South Korea kicked off their planned Freedom Shield (FS) exercises, which will last for 11 days until March 24. Earlier this month, North Korea vehemently criticized ongoing U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK) joint military drills, which it claims as a rehearsal for invasion. North Korea last year launched what it called its first operational nuclear attack submarine, which analysts said appeared to be a modified from an existing submarine and likely designed to carry ballistic and cruise missiles. Conventionally armed BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles are the mainstay of the Navy’s arsenal for attacking land targets. With their long range and high precision, they are useful for taking on highly defended targets, and a salvo of cruise missiles will typically be fired to suppress defenses ahead of a strike by manned aircraft.

Stay up-to-date with missile defense

In theory, such capacity would bolster its deterrent by ensuring a survivable capability to retaliate after absorbing a nuclear attack on land. Navy sought a precision land attack cruise missile capable of a much smaller CEP. Kim issued similar comments about a nuclear-armed navy in September while attending the launching ceremony of what the North described as a new submarine capable of firing tactical nuclear weapons from underwater. He said then that the country was pursuing a nuclear-propelled submarine and that it plans to remodel existing submarines and surface vessels so they can handle nuclear weapons. The report came a day after South Korea’s military said it detected North Korea firing multiple cruise missiles over waters near the eastern port of Sinpo, where the North has a major shipyard developing submarines. It was the latest in a streak of weapons demonstrations by North Korea amid increasing tensions with the United States, South Korea and Japan.

The US Government approved an agreement in 2003 to deliver 65 Tomahawk Block IV missiles for the UK. In August 2004, the US Navy placed a $1.6bn multi-year procurement contract with Raytheon for 2,200 Tomahawk Block IV missiles. The Tomahawk Block IV missile is powered by a Williams International F415 cruise turbo-fan engine and ARC MK 135 rocket motor. The Block IV Tomahawk missile is outfitted with advanced electronic support measure (ESM) seeker in Block IV Tomahawk missile.

The Tomahawk Block IV uses GPS navigation and a satellite data-link to continue through a pre-set course. South Korea's military said on Monday it believed the submarine "has no military use" and the vessel appeared to be under repair or maintenance. Kim separately inspected the construction of a nuclear submarine and discussed issues related to the manufacturing of other types of new warships, KCNA said but gave no details. Kim "set forth the important tasks arising in realizing the nuclear weaponization of the navy and expanding the sphere of operation of the state nuclear deterrence in a diversified way," KCNA said.

NCM has also been designed to be launched from the 21 inch torpedo tubes of a submerged submarine. While not specified, the nuclear cruise missile would be a relatively low-yield weapon compared to the submarine-launched Trident ballistic missiles. A $25.9m contract for Tomahawk missile composite capsule launching systems (C/CLS) was awarded in December 2014.

The C/CLS is integrated with the nuclear-powered fast-attack submarines and nuclear-powered guided-missile submarines, allowing the missile to be launched from submarines. “In the future, it will lead to the development of submarine-launched ballistic missiles and nuclear-powered submarines, which will have a much higher impact than SLCMs,” he added. The launch, North Korea’s sixth missile test this year, marked the first time the North had tested cruise missiles from a submarine. The country last launched a short-range ballistic missile from a submarine on May 7 off its east coast.

Photos published on Monday by state media appeared to show Kim watching the tests from a vantage point above a body of water. In one photo released by KCNA, Kim appeared to be pointing at a missile in mid-flight. KCNA said the submarine marked the beginning of a new chapter for North Korea’s navy. Kim expressed “great satisfaction” over Sunday’s test, according to KCNA, noting North Korea’s determination to build a “powerful naval force”. Second test of weapon in days as North Korea accelerates efforts to modernise its navy.

Disney Cruise Line vs Royal Caribbean: Which family-friendly cruise line is for you?

disney cruise caribbean

For self-guided fun, check out the Midship Detective Agency scavenger hunt onboard Disney Fantasy and Dream, a Muppets-themed mystery with clues hidden in "enchanted art" -- digital artwork that comes to life when you approach. And onboard Disney Wish, the interactive mobile phone-based Disney Uncharted Adventure takes guests throughout the ship on a quest to battle a Disney villain. On the other hand, Disney offers the AquaDuck and AquaDunk “water coasters” on the Fantasy and Dream, with a new longer version called the Aqua Mouse onboard Disney Wish, but that's the extent of adrenaline-inducing activities. Royal Caribbean offers Italian, Brazilian, Mexican, Asian, sushi, teppanyaki, and a steakhouse on their ships.

Are Port Adventures Always Guided Tours?

Remy is a fancy adults-only French restaurant that costs $125 per person for dinner (more if you order drinks). This is the type of place where men need jackets and women are expected to wear dresses, pantsuits or a skirt and blouse. Enchante on Disney Wish is similar — you're dressing up for these meals. At the top of the "costs extra" list are the restaurants Palo (found on all five ships, though it's Palo Steakhouse on Disney Wish), Remy (on Dream and Fantasy) and Enchante (only on Disney Wish). A pro-level hack is to get Mickey churro waffles from the buffet in the morning (only available some mornings) and add vanilla ice cream for a vacation-worthy breakfast.

But fares can vary greatly across the fleet, so it’s always worth comparing. Disney’s Castaway Cay provides a more laid-back beach experience where families can play together, and childless travelers can enjoy an adult-only section. There is a snorkeling lagoon, a couple of waterslides and splash parks for the little ones; the youth staff will also schedule activities, and teens have their own hideout to lounge and chill. Disney characters also make their rounds on the island, so be on the lookout for Captain Hook or perhaps even Captain Jack Sparrow.

With a history shaped by ancient Mayans, English pirates, and the Mexican Navy, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this enchanting area of unspoiled natural beauty. You’ll have your own dedicated agent from start to finish — no massive call centers and no waiting on hold! Not only will they book your cruise, but they’ll also handle all your Port Adventure bookings. Some offerings may be limited to certain itineraries or times of year. Your cruise won’t cost any more than if you’d booked it yourself, and they don’t charge any planning fees.

For example, 50 non-sailing guests can take part in weddings aboard Carnival Cruise Line ships before the cruise sails from the port of embarkation. Many cruise lines, including Disney Cruise Lines, Carnival and Royal Caribbean, offer weddings and wedding renewals aboard the ship or at scenic tropical locations. We're lucky in Florida, home to some of the world's busiest cruise ports including PortMiami, Port Canaveral, Port Everglades, Port Tampa Bay, JAXPORT, and Port of Palm Beach. There is also a port in Key West, but this is mainly used for cruise ship calls rather than a homeport.

The ultimate guide to Disney Cruise Line ships and itineraries

The concierge lounge team is also not included in prepaid gratuities for concierge guests, and Disney recommends $8 per night per guest. Most of the entertainment on board is included in the overall cost of your sailing. Port Adventures booked through Disney are charged to your shipboard account and paid at the end of your cruise. Payment for privately-booked tours is often due in full at the time they’re reserved. Disney’s excursions are also usually fully refundable up until three days before your cruise.

You can also order alcoholic drinks from the coffee bars, which run the typical cocktail prices. Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy both have a virtual sports simulator that requires a reservation and a fee. You can play various sports, from football to golf, for either 30- or 60-minute time blocks. You will have to pay to park at the port or at a third-party parking lot.

Based on my research, Disney cruises tend to sell out, especially during popular times like when kids are out of school. When doing initial research for this trip, I did a lot of googling and looking at the options for Disney cruises. We are in South Carolina and are lucky enough to be able to drive to Port Canaveral so we focused on cruises that left from that location. After throwing around a lot of different ideas – and actually booking and then canceling a trip to Yellowstone – we settled on a Disney cruise as being the most child-friendly possible option for this age. My family of four recently got back from a seven day cruise on the Disney fantasy cruise ship.

Choose Royal Caribbean if you like big ships and cruises that appeal to all ages and interests or if you're looking for smaller ships and are fine with older ships and more traditional onboard activities. If you need a wide variety of itineraries to choose from, are looking to cruise to more far-flung destinations or need options for affordable rooms or a wide selection of suites, Royal Caribbean is the line for you. If you want a more adult environment, look for smaller or older ships, longer itineraries and off-peak travel times. If you want to find families, look for weeklong cruises sailing during school breaks.

Atlantis Aquaventure is huge and has some very neat water slides and a great rapids river called the Current, but it’s not so much better than the Orlando parks to merit the price difference. In fact, we’d say the Orlando parks are easier to navigate and better planned for practical touring. All that said, Atlantis as a whole is pretty spectacular and a unique destination. The Dig, the predator lagoons, the Aquaventure park and the art and the architecture are all unlike anything anywhere else (except maybe the other Atlantis resorts), so it’s very hard to say what it’s worth. If you have people in your party who love water parks, or love aquariums, it’s probably worth a visit.

While the ship is large and beautiful, I do think that a lot of the fits and finishes are dated. There were three different Disney ships at the time that were leaving from Port Canaveral, but I didn’t really do any planning based on the ship. We don’t really drink soda, but I drank a few cokes on the trip just because they were there. I certainly would have never bought tickets for my kids to see a Broadway style show. But it’s low risk when they’re free, and, what do you know, turns out my kids love musicals and we went 5 times.

If you just want to soak up the atmosphere, gamble, or have some lunch, you’re welcome to do so by coming in the Coral Towers entrance. You should know, though, that pretty much all of the iconic Atlantis architecture and decor is in and around the Royal Towers, which are off-limits without a pass. You can get an Aquaventure pass on-site, when available, which includes beach and Dig access. However, when the resort is very full, such as during spring break, they may not offer walk-up Aquaventure passes, or they may sell out quickly. If you know you want to visit Aquaventure, it’s a good idea to book through Disney or use the tip below to book a hotel day room. If you just want to view the Dig or the beach, there are passes that don’t include Aquaventure available at a lower price.

Then, enjoy a brief manatee encounter along with an internationally-inspired lunch. If you're looking at Disney Cruise Line versus Royal Caribbean for your next vacation at sea, you can't go wrong with either line. I'm in Charleston, South Carolina, navigating the wild world of parenting with my energetic 3-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son.

As Disney’s own private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay offers an exclusive Bahamian hideaway that’s open only to one Disney cruise ship a day — and no one else! There’s plenty to do for free on the island, but also a wide array of optional paid activities. Disney Cruise Line ships mainly sail to the Caribbean and Bahamas on weeklong or shorter sailings. Three- and four-night cruises from Florida home ports, especially Port Canaveral, are ideal for tacking onto short visits to Disney World in Orlando.
